Small World in Lafayette and Alameda provides Mandarin immersion, music and international awareness programs to East Bay children and their parents. Small World was founded in May, 2007 by Lynley Sides with the help of a rich advisory board, two amazing Mandarin teachers and some very supportive families.

Teachers

Amy Kao teaches Small World classes in Lafayette and Alameda to 3-6 year old children. Her 24 years experience as a Mandarin tutor and instructor includes children’s classes at the Jefferson Elementary School, Epworth Church in Berkeley, Aquatic Park School and CFC Church. Amy lives in Albany with her husband and three boys ages 24, 20 and 16.







Mavis Leong teaches afternoon classes to 4-8 year olds. She has taught with Small World for 3 years and is adored by the kids. She graduated from UCLA in 2007 with a B.A. degree in Chinese and has completed her CSET (California Single Subject Examination for Teachers) and CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test). She worked with her church children's choir for 6 years and has cared for young children for many years. Mavis lives in Moraga.





Joyce Gu teaches Small World afternoon classes to 4-8 year olds and also the “parent & me” class. She received her Bachelor of Chinese Teaching from Nanjing University in China. In 10 years of teaching young children of all ages, she has developed her own methods for helping children learn Mandarin in a fun and efficient way.
